Slashing $33 million in funding from The Department of Aging has left thousands of elderly people languishing without critical services
The pandemic has dramatically increased the number of elderly New Yorkers waiting for help from city-funded agencies — and advocates say these services may NEVER come.
They can’t go out, the senior centers are closed, they can’t get to their community groups or to the supermarket even, and so while the demand for these services has ballooned, the city has not responded with a plan to meet the need.”
New data from LiveOn NY, a senior advocacy group, shows that the number of older Big Apple residents waiting to receive critical services has soared 265 percent, since February and “It's growing exponentially, it’s catastrophic to people’s lives.”
"Many older New Yorkers might not even be alive by the time they make it off the waitlist."
“You have a virus that specifically is affecting older New Yorkers … and there’s been zero investment in trying to figure that out. Instead, there are cuts.”
Many older New Yorkers such as Monserrate Arteca relied on local community groups for help, but those support systems have been stripped away.
Monserrate Arteca, 79, of Brooklyn is currently on a wait list through senior-service provider RiseBoro Community Partnership to get help with such things as housekeeping, and personal care.
She had recently been waiting for a call from her doctor to fulfill a prescription, only to realize her phone wasn’t working and that’s why she hadn’t heard from them.
When it’s a political priority, the city finds money to do what it needs to do, and it is obvious in this time, to me, that older New Yorkers are not a priority because the city has not put resources or even talk behind this issue.
The city Department for the Aging said in a statement to The Post, “The City is in an unprecedented financial and public health crisis" DeBlasio and Cuomo should do something, instead they do nothing!
